This is a really great post!
It makes so much sense, putting all your "failures" behind you and starting new, and full out.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for writing from Canada! I'll assume that your cows and horses have similar beliefs, it's us humans that think a bit wonky at times. It seems to me you've described a few different 'cultures' as you'd expect from any population. :)
Enjoy your horses, and thanks for your response.

Interesting question, my experience of horses and cattle, co-mingled, segregated or just left alone all relates to horses and cattle in Africa, perhaps American animals are different?

Our 20 or so horses were let out to graze every day in paddocks close to our house and stables. This was so that they were close by when we wanted to ride or train them or bring them in for their evening grooming, feed and overnight stabling.

At times, our small dairy herd would share the horse paddocks. At other times, the dairy herd would be out in more distant paddocks with the beef herd.

Horses and cattle tend to eat different grasses, they also have a different method of breaking off the grass. Horses can graze closer to the ground than cattle.

I have seen a few horses that will bully cattle and continually chase them away from other horses. I have also seen a few very aggressive cattle (Cows, bulls and infrequently, steers) attack horses. This can be dangerous if the cattle still have their horns.

So there are a number of valid reasons why some farmers may run both species together and others keep them apart. There is also a strong possibility that either choice continues for generations "because we have always done it that way". As you put it, that is the belief.

Here in Canada, I only have horses.
