Doing Business in Uncertain Times

Yes, we’re living in some strange and crazy times. Many of us are feeling all sorts of feels, having all sorts of worries and wondering all sorts of wonderings. 

For lots of us, we’ve been knocked down, knocked off track and definitely our Certainty has slipped.

You are for sure not alone in this.

Whether you’re now home with kids with no time to think, or stuck alone with too much time to think… this can be hard. 

In many ways life is as uncertain as its always been. We pretend it isn’t, but it is, and times like Now make it hard to sell that illusion to ourselves. I know that I generally operate as if… as if I know, as If the future can be predicted, as if I know what will happen if I do… whatever. 

Now, we have to admit and see that we often don’t know. We don’t know any of ‘it’.

Business owners and entrepreneurs are especially good at playing this game. Why you may ask?

Because we are the ones who take on playing with the possibilities. We’re always asking ourselves:
What’s next?
What’s possible now?
What can we do knowing what we know Now?
What has changed recently and how do we use that to our advantage?
How do I contribute in greater ways?

Where are there new opportunities?

These represent only a small window into questions we’re constantly asking ourselves… and now more than ever we will keep those front and center.

It’s useful to notice what’s happening. Not to deny what we see. But that does not mean that we have no options.

Now we have the time to slow down and notice.

Now we have the ability to dream new dreams.

Now we can design new strategies for taking on what’s next.

Things are changing rapidly, so we must be fast on our feet to meet those changes. I suggest visiting your strategy much more often than you have in the past.

The collective energy is heavy. Do what you must to keep your own energy ‘up’, from taking walks, a bath, meditate more, whatever fuels your soul to help you stay balanced.

Stay on top of your numbers as best as you can, perhaps releasing (even if temporary) any services you don’t need. 

With concerns over incomes, and those of team members, you may want to look at options and together create ways to mitigate damage. Some are taking temporary cuts in pay rather than furloughing when possible.

Beyond that (And these are just a few items for sure), here’s what you can do to kickstart your business if it was not designed to be done remotely OR can not operate right now.

With a fresh eye have a look at the following:

Revisit your ideal client profile
Consider their challenges at this moment.
Consider what you may offer/design to meet those needs and how to deliver to them.
Be creative
See if you can find a new collaboration, or partner… something new you didn’t see before…
Be seen by your audience, now is not a time to hide.
Try what you’ve been ‘considering’…
Stay connected

And Please – Get Support!

Start there and see what you uncover.

What I know for sure is that Leaders are creative.
You may fall but you get up to try again.
Where others see obstacles, we see new cool opportunities.
You value resilience.
You embrace the roller coaster of this life.

These are the same qualities that will allow you to get through these uncertain times too. 

So go there.
Rest in that.
Know that better is coming and you will meet it.

Recall when you’ve done that before, and allow that to give you strength.

Whether it was in ’08, or ’87.

Maybe it was when you were a kid.
Or lost a job.
Or had a bad breakup.

We’ve all been through something bad.

And we have made it through.

Together, we will again.

As you forge ahead remember …. ‘You were born for such a time as this’.
