Start the Year with An Audit
Just as I was getting ready to write this article, I decided to open some mail. Interesting, because in it was an article about doing an ‘Energy Audit’. It pertained to our homes, but got me thinking about our businesses. After all, doing an energy audit isn’t something most of us do on a regular basis, but oh, how powerful are the possibilities?! Just as in our homes, we’re leaking energy every day. We give to our business, our families, homes, friends, and even pets, and all that before we get to our own energy needs!
Without noticing, the energy output can deplete us as often times we’re not even aware until we’ve completely crashed. We pretend to think that we’ve got an endless source of this ‘stuff’, or we may be forced to face reality when the ‘bill’ comes (in the case of our electricity, or we end up sick), which can mean we’ve completely hit the rails and are dysfunctional. Something I experienced first-hand not too long ago.
As we move into our next phase of creating for the year, I invite you to do an energy audit. Here’s how you can get started.
1. Don’t assume you already know where you may or may not be leaking energy. Take the time to look. Recently a client discovered that something he was ‘sure of’, completely shifted when taking this approach.
Tip: Be mindful that this isn’t only about physical energy. We have emotional energy, spiritual energy, and our brain & mind energy too. Each greatly impacts the others. Notice for instance where your energy is spent in your business that gets you really drained. It’s likely that’s an activity for you to give away or delegate.
2. Rate your energy levels in each of the areas you’re considering. So if you think of your work life, then consider your levels in each area of body, mind & spirit.
Tip: Even if you’re not into New Age, woo-woo stuff, don’t underestimate how valuable this can be. Again, when something wipes you out in one area, notice how it impacts all areas. Then consider another way to get that done. If it’s bookkeeping, hiring someone for a few hours a month can be life changing.
3. Consider how you could increase, or stop the leak in one area. The last thing you want is to add pressure by taking on too much too fast in this area.
Tip: This can seem fairly simple, like getting more sleep, or doing something you’d rather not (like exercise or denying yourself food), but please look deeper. Often that’s the first step in what is best served by consulting with a professional, like an organizer, teacher or coach.
In case it’s not clear to you what this has to do with business growth, let me just say that is has everything to do with it. When your energy isn’t at its best, you may not be giving the value you could to your clients, family and yourself. Everyone and everything you’re involved with is cheated.
When we take the time to consciously design our lives, where we want to spend our energy is part of that equation. Further when we do so, we’re able to give our best to each area, giving us more freedom and allowing us to live richly, which after all is the point of this crazy ride. So, live your best life this year, and I wish you the energy to enjoy every moment!
And for those who are ready to embark on this year with clarity, intention and guidance please reach out. Two spots are available, so let’s start the year right together and expand into a new version of Impactful Leaders living our true mission.
